The Barrel Dee applies pressure to the sides of the tongue, bars and lips while the Dee ring cheeks apply pressure at the sides of the face which can help aid younger horses to turn. The fixed cheek pieces prevent the mouthpiece from pinching the horse's lips and sliding through the horses mouth.
